Abstract

Welcome to the International Conference on Software and Systems Process (ICSSP 2011) held in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, on May 21-22, 2011. Since the first conference in 2007, the precursor ICSP conference series has established its place in the software engineering community as a respected conference focusing on research and practice related to software development process. Software and systems development is a complex endeavor that takes place in a dynamic context of evolving technologies, rapid changing environments, and limited resources. Moreover, higher levels of global competition and financial stresses place increasing pressure on development teams worldwide to deliver software, systems and services more quickly and with higher levels of quality, while still managing to minimize the risk of project failure. These practitioners seek pragmatic solutions that address these critical challenges. We firmly believe and experience has shown that improving processes are an important part of the solution to this challenge. In 2011, the new ICSSP conference series is the successor to the past ICSP conference series, widening the ICSP scope from a focus on software process to a focus on the larger issues relating to systems development processes research and practice. Correspondingly, the main theme of ICSSP 2011 is "Processes for Tomorrow's Systems Engineering" offering the community a new perspective on systems engineering process. This is also the first occasion that the technical program features short papers as additions to the invited talks and full research papers on the most relevant topics related to processes for developing software and systems. In response to the Call for Papers, this year 102 submissions were received by authors from 30 countries and regions. With the exception of one withdrawn paper, every paper was rigorously reviewed and held to very high quality standards, and finally 18 full research papers and 10 short papers were accepted for presentation at the conference, representing an acceptance rate close to 25% for full research papers. The accepted papers present completed research or advanced work-in-progress in all areas of software and systems process. They were clustered around topics and presented in six full paper sessions and two short paper sessions. Highlights of the ICSSP 2011 program are two keynote speeches, delivered by Barry Boehm (University of Southern California) and Ross Jeffery (National ICT Australia, University of New South Wales). The conference program also includes a panel "Toward a Rich Process Manifesto", organized by Marco Kuhrmann (TU Munich) and Andreas Rausch (TU Clausthal). Panelists are Ove Armbrust (Fraunhofer IESE), Barry Boehm (University of Southern California), Pat Kirwan (SEI), and Philippe Kruchten (University of British Columbia).
