Abstract

This paper describes a method for exploring executable architects along 3 dimensions: DoDAF elements, modeling language implementations (such as IDEF, UML, SysML and BPMN) and modeling formalism. It then begins to explore this question along 2 of these dimensions, as a means to describe a method for future work. A subset of DoDAF views is provided as a foundational context for problem space investigation. The 52 views available under DoDAF 2.0 are broad and diverse and beyond the scope of an executable architecture focus. This paper distills this set down to 18 DoDAF 2.0 views. Secondly the paper arrays four modeling language areas (Structured, UML, SysML and BPMN) against this subset of DoDAF views to assess for elemental goodness of fit. Results show SysML as the strongest candidate. More importantly results lay the ground work for addressing modeling gaps against the DoDAF executable architecture elemental subset, suggesting these gaps may be a basis for describing essential elements, particularly as modeling is expanded into simulation.
