Abstract

This paper gives a brief survey of the authors' experience in designing and assessing systems for the secure processing and transmission of information in electronic media. It considers the range of encipherment algorithms currently available in the civil field for use in protecting financial transactions and the like. As a consequence of using encipherment, key management must be properly engineered and the right physical environment provided for the various sensitive functions. Finally some of the management aspects of secure systems are addressed.
