To account for communication dynamics in the simulation of power systems and their control, a novel co-simulation framework is proposed here. This method realizes a co-simulation platform through the integration of two simulation environments: Virtual Test Bed (VTB) and Optimized Network Engineering Tool (OPNET) through a communication middleware. VTB is used to implement and simulate the electrical power distribution systems and the control units. OPNET is used to implement and simulate the communication network. The middleware functions as interface for data exchange between VTB and OPNET. The effectiveness of the proposed co-simulation framework is verified on a medium voltage DC (MVDC) distribution system with communication constraints.
