Abstract

The paper conserns the automation of the flare stars detection through astronomical observations with plates obtained by the multi-exposure "chain" method. Nevertheless that the astronomical plate observations are considered obsolete in the modern astronomy, computer processing of star chains' images is an actual problem, due to the large archieves of wide-field plates in Bulgaria, Europe as well as all over the world. As the star chains in the considered images have one and the same direction, it seems natural to use a Hough transform (HT) to evaluate their slope and to localize them. But direct usage of HT does not lead to an effective performance because of the large size of astronomical images. We propose a heuristic approach for generation of the so-called "reduced cumulative image of chains", and a new algorithm of using it for an effective evaluation of chains' slope via HT. Test results, analyses and illustrations of the proposed algorithm are presented finally.
