A review of the options for communications between nanoscale devices is provided. This begins with a brief discussion of nano-machines followed by the broad categories available for the communication process. Details of methods inspired by nature and by new inorganic materials are provided to outline the complete field at present. Molecular communication is chosen as an example since it is the most developed in the literature. Performance indications are given for uncoded transmission and the potential of error correction coding discussed based on the information capacity of the system. To conclude, the developments necessary to realize the potential of nanoscale communications are briefly considered.
