Abstract

The design of future spoken and multimodal interfaces should not only compare voice with other modalities of interaction. Instead, it should take screen-based smartphones as a basis and add new, gesture-based anthropocentric interaction forms to it. A potential speech-based interaction can then be smoothly integrated. We focus on the thumb's role while carrying a handheld device in the left or right hand.
