Abstract

Simulations using swarm-based multi-agent distributed architecture may provide appropriate tools to optimise traffic flow in today's traffic clogged cities. This paper describes an application of this approach in the city of Wroclaw (Poland) using ant algorithms and a multi-agent system. A model of the cities road network was generated which, combined with an analysis of traffic data, enabled traffic flow in the city to be simulated and then optimised. As a result, modifications were proposed to existing road layouts including delineation of a new road section. The results achieved clearly demonstrate the suitability of this approach for route optimisation.
