Abstract

Although in medical fields a lot of different software systems are in use, no knowledge based system exists to support the ophthalmic surgeons before, during and after the surgical cataract intervention. But there is a need to correlate the diagnostic results of the eye measurements with the knowledge of the experts, to perform a well designed operation, regarding the patient situation, the different surgical techniques, the intraocular lens (IOL) features and the diagnostics. So, the causal and time dependant knowledge is managed by a software system which will be running in the hospitals and in ophthalmocenters. The system is conceptualized as a frame based information system and uses also rule based representations for the causal dependencies. A comfortable graphical user interface is designed for the explanation part, for the operational planning and an intelligent navigation through the association network. So, the computer triggered decision making support can optimize the IOL selection process in combination with surgical methods, based on the patient related situation. This proposal shows a knowledge engineering process to a well structured knowledge base for the surgeons.
