Abstract

Since the traditional periodic polling based network management framework is not suitable to understand network-wide behavior of a large-scale Internet, dedicated measurement tools have been required for the precise service evaluation. This paper proposes a measurement scheme to monitor the quality of service (QoS) of IP multimedia services. The proposed scheme gives users the ability to evalaute their services within the current Internet engineering task force (IETF) management framework. We dispatch an Internet control message protocol (ICMP) based test packet to a remote server repeatedly and gather the performance information using the proposed service monitoring management information base (SM MIB). The experiments conducted on the real networks show that the SM MIB is useful for end-to-end QoS monitoring.
