This paper describes a new approach of case based reasoning for the design of geologic structure models. It supports geologists in analysing building ground by retrieving and adapting old projects. Projects are divided in several complex cases consisting of pairs of drilling cores with their outcrop and the spatial context. A three-step retrieval algorithm (1) selects structurally similar candidate cases, (2) estimates the quality of a transfer of the layer structures to the query, and (3) retrieves from the remaining set of promising cases the most geologically and geometrically similar cases. The case based system is able to adapt a similar case to the query situation and to export the result to a 3D visualisation tool. A first evaluation has shown that the case based system works well and saves time.
