Abstract

Data center operators strive to meet various objectives such as improve end-user experience, plan infrastructure to support business volumes, mitigate risk, reduce cost, etc. Given the large scale, heterogeneity, and complexity of today's data centers, deriving recommendations for meeting such objectives is a very challenging task. We argue that to provide such recommendations, if-what analysis has become a pressing need of today's data-center operators. We formulate the problem of if-what analysis and present various design issues and challenges in building this solution.
