Abstract

Opportunistic spectrum access without interference with primary users is one of the fundamental cognitive radio behaviours. Exhibiting such a behaviour is not a trivial task. We propose Distributed Spectrum Map (DSM), a database driven real-time and historic spectrum map for cognitive radio ad hoc networks facilitating opportunistic spectrum access. DSM is a novel approach towards developing a distributed network support architecture for efficient spectrum utilization. Heterogeneous nodes with different sensing capabilities collaborate to support the architecture in a distributed manner and maintain a knowledge base for spectrum utilization. The DSM is used by a cognitive engine for making real-time spectrum decisions.
