We study the SER performance in underlay cognitive radio (CR) systems comprising a secondary transmitter (ST), a secondary receiver (SR) and a primary receiver (PR). We assume that the ST, SR and PR are each equipped with a single antenna. Under the average interference constraint at the PR and the peak transmitted power constraint at the ST, we consider the problem of transmitted power allocation. We derive the optimal power allocation strategy to minimize the average SER at the SR. In comparison to capacity achieving power allocation strategy, where the water-filling schemes are generally optimal, our study shows that the optimal power allocation scheme for minimizing the SER offers no simple closed-form solutions. Moreover, we derive an algorithm to compute the optimal power distribution and demonstrate the SER performance analytically. All analytic the SER curves are verified by the numerical simulations.
