Abstract

IEEE 802.11 based wireless networks have seen rapid growth and deployment in the recent years. Critical to the 802.11 MAC operation, is the handover function which occurs when a mobile node moves its association from one access point to another. This paper presents a new approach adopting handover prediction to support seamless handover. In addition, the main idea of proposed method in this paper is to generate nCoA(new Care of Address) for fast handover by using CAM(Content associated Memory). nCoAs are constructed before entering into the new radio coverages of neighbor APs(Access point). When MN(Mobile Node) moves toward new AP, MN achieves BSSID(Basic Service Set ID) from new AP. And then MN compares it to decide nCoA that matches one of candidate Prefixes with BSSID in the MN’s cache. If it matches, MN sends hit information to oAR. And then AR’s cache writes this hit information to its own cache. And then the rest of FMIPv6 procedure is processed properly.
