Abstract

A standard membrane model, based on the continuous deterministicHodgkin-Huxley equations, is compared to an alternative membranemodel, based on discrete stochastic ion channel populationsrepresented through Markov processes. Simulations explore therelationship between these two levels of description: the behaviorpredicted by the macroscopic membrane currents versus the behaviorpredicted by their microscopic ion channels. Discussion considersthe extent to which these random events underlying neural signalsmediate random events in neural computation.
