We study two-dimensional motion perception in flies using asemicircular visual stimulus. Measurements of both the H1-neuronand the optomotor response are consistent with a simple modelsupposing spatial integration of the outputs of correlation-typemotion detectors. In both experiment and model, there issubstantial H1 and horizontal (yaw) optomotor response to purelyvertical motion of the stimulus. We conclude that the fly'soptomotor response to a two-dimensional pattern, depending on itsstructure, may deviate considerably from the direction of patternmotion.
