The problems faced by the science and engineering communities fundamentally go beyond "do I need a database?" or "do I need a faster database?" questions. We believe some fundamental changes are needed in the way we think about the relationships between computation and data. In this paper, we provide a detailed discussion of the motivations behind our suggested changes and introduce our thoughts on some new directions for the radical transformations that are needed. We present the rationale for our position and discuss our preliminary work in the new directions that we outline.
