Private networks carry vital and sensitive business communications between employees, customers, and enterprise partners across widely dispersed geographic area. All users of these private networks want to access data and resources as if they were located at the same physical site in the enterprise. To complement classical corporate wide area network infrastructures, IP Virtual Private Networks have been gaining ground, with the capability of offering cost-effective, secure, and private-network like services. IP VPNs also guarantee high revenues to the Service Providers. Deploying VPNs, especially in a large-scale environment, needs a large amount of planning. In this paper we propose a layered framework for building an IP VPN that can be used to cater to the needs of various users of the enterprise. We have considered a hypothetical case study. We have discussed the design issues and a possible implementation scenario. We have also surveyed few future technologies related to VPNs that could provide additional value-added services to VPN users that are in their early stages of becoming products.
