In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm of gray-level watermarks based on the characteristics of image. The DCT coefficients of the watermark image are embedded into the position of DCT domain of host image by considering the similarity of DCT blocks energy of both images. The algorithm recovers the watermark without any reference to the original image and we propose a post-processing procedure, which can correct the errors by the survived information, to obtain higher quality watermark. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm adapted to the original image produces the most imperceptible and the most robust watermarked image under print-and-scanner and various attacks.
