In this paper we study the influence of the distribution of transmitter locations on the structure of service areas of individual transmitters. In order to obtain a general model, we approximate the collection of service areas by Voronoi diagrams generated by the transmitter locations. We give an overview of the key statistical characteristics of Voronoi cells, and how they can be computed efficiently. We then apply these techniques to both probabilistic node location models, as well as location data sets corresponding to different network types. The results indicate that the statistics of service areas under this approximation have strong dependency on the structure of the transmitter distribution, and that real networks tend to lead to highly different structures compared to commonly utilized node location models.
