Emerging technologies such as wireless sensor networks will allow, in the near future, the existence of intelligent cities, where autonomous decision making is used to optimize the resource usage and to prevent or handle disasters. A hierarchical data aggregation concept helps coping with very large amount of information arriving from sensors, by summarizing data and providing only correct and relevant values for the decision making units. The hierarchy consists of three functional layers and leads to a reduced energy consumption in the wireless sensor network, a reduced load on metropolitan network and an adequate central database size.
