In this paper we present a synchronization mechanism using application-sensitive hint. Data consistency protocol for providing client coherency and data integrity imposes great impacts on the performance of distributed file systems. We propose a new form of data consistency protocol that aims to enhance I/O performance of various applications. In our method, according to the application-sensitive hint, multiple lock acquisition functions are adopted to establish a desirable lock schedule. Also, we applied the basic idea of the synchronization method to the grid environment where maintaining replication consistency is significantly important to produce correct results among geographically distributed scientists. A series of measurements were conducted to verify our scheme.
