This paper presents the results of a study on the effects of data aggregation for target tracking in wireless sensor networks. In these networks energy, computing power and communication bandwidth are scarce. A novel approach towards data aggregation is proposed. It is tested in a simulation environment and compared with more straightforward methods. The results of the experiments clearly show the benefit of the new approach in terms of energy consumption and tracking accuracy.
