With the increasing demand for location-aware services, the location determination system has emerged as an essential component of e-society, and due to the wide-spread deployment of wireless local area networks (WLAN), the location determination system based on WLAN has become a hot research area. However, the prediction accuracy remains a primary issue for the practicality of WLAN-based systems. This study proposes an accumulated orientation strength algorithm that can smartly utilize uncertain estimated orientation information to improve prediction accuracy. A sample application for course information retrieval is built to demonstrate the usefulness of location-aware services. The experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
