Abstract

Reducing power consumption and increasing battery life of nodes in an ad hoc network requires an integrated power control and routing strategy. To maximize the lifetime of mobile networks, the power consumption rate of each node must be evenly distributed. This objective alone cannot be satisfied by the use of routing algorithms proposed in previous work. In this paper a new route selection mechanism for MANET routing protocol, called as Self Organizing Routing (SOR). Self Organized Routing (SOR) algorithm is devised to enable high-energy nodes to participate in routing of data packets using a virtual backbone. Hence the lifetime and stability of the network is increased as nodes having high energy are involved in routing of packets. Based on the simulation results obtained using GloMoSim (simulator), it is observed that SOR algorithm increase the lifetime of mobile ad hoc networks and validate the environment suitable for the various techniques.
