This work presents a case-based reasoning (CBR) approach in Knowledge Base (KB) development. The selection of biomaterials/bioproducts is used as an exemplar to the practices recommended for transforming formalism and knowledge modeling to a suitable decision aid. It is proved that the proposed structuring of the knowledge Base can successfully cope with target-specific but inherently wide-focused queries through a dialectic tradeoff between input and inferred features. The framework can be easily adapted to other application domains, the complexity of which necessitates the dialectics/synergy between formalism-oriented knowledge modeling and content-oriented case based reasoning.
