In this paper, we propose a packet forwarding scheme to reduce the power consumption in wireless mesh networks. To save the transmission power, the proposed scheme utilizes a network coding (NC) method. Since the quantity of the forwarded packets can be reduced by NC, the energy consumption for packet transmission (TX) can be reduced. However, the energy consumption for packet reception (RX) can be increased because the neighbor nodes should overhear and process the unnecessary packets. Simulation results show that the total power consumption can be reduced by 12.5% in the proposed scheme compared with the conventional schemes.
