Abstract

Telemedical information systems (TISs) form the basis for telemedicine services as well as for health information services. This paper gives an introduction to the wide scope of TISs and discusses examples for the different types of TISs: patient-related TISs, knowledge-related TISs and meta-TISs. It concludes that for patient-related TISs, there is a need for a better integration of TISs with other patient-centered information systems. For the other types of TISs, more sophisticated retrieval techniques and better user interfaces for ordinary users are required. Furthermore, short descriptions of our own projects are given: the patient-related TIS of the project TECSAC (TEle-Collaboration for Signal Analysis in Cardiology), which is a distributed electronic patient record for cardiology, and the domain-specific knowledge-related TISs ODITEB (Online DIstributed TExtBook), which is a radiological Internet textbook, and ENDOTEL-EIS (ENDOscopic TELemedicine Endoscopy Information System).
