Using X Window system, the C programming language, and an extended form of the MUMPS programming language, we have defined and are implementing a workstation-based environment that allows multiple natural languages to appear in independent windows on the same display. The MUMPS language extension creates a polymorphic facility that can execute without change on character sets and linguistic elements of different, languages. Syntax of the proposed language extensions are described. Initial application areas will include research involving medical records written in several different natural languages, the development of teaching tools for language instruction, and recognition of domain-sensitive information in scanning large free text files.
