A survey of the field of data smoothing for lumped-parameter, linear and nonlinear, dynamic systems is presented. The survey beings with the work of Kepler and Gauss, proceeds through that of Kolmogorov and Wiener, and concludes with the studies of numerous researchers during the past 10-12 years. The purpose of the survey is to place in perspective the development of the field of data smoothing relative to the broader area of estimation theory of which it is a part.
