Abstract

A general theory for the optimal regulation of linear systems, comprised of infinite identical objects, is developed. The bilateral z transform generating function is used to eliminate the object indices, which leads to a Riccati equation in the z domain. The theory is applied to the string of vehicles problem where the number of vehicles is infinite. The proper structure for a typical vehicle controller and numerical results for the amount of feedback a typical vehicle requires from other vehicles are obtained.
