This work proposes a solution for the problem of dealing, in an autonomous way, with fragmented indexes within relational DBMS. We propose monitoring the current state of existing indexes and, if they become fragmented but still useful, rebuild them automatically. Our approach is based on adhoc heuristics that have been implemented in the Post-greSQL DBMS. Practical tests are presented to show the applicability and effectiveness of our approach.
