The Xpress Transfer Protocol (XTP) offers new functionality and performance for modern distributed applications. Recently adopted by the United States Department of Defense for use in military mission-critical systems, XTP provides a rich set of communications mechanisms without forcing the user to adopt a predefined communications policy. The user is free to choose those XTP mechanisms which implement whatever communications paradigm best suits the user's application. In this paper, we discuss the background for XTP's invention, the motivation and rationale for developing a new transport and network layer protocol, the specific functional and performance advantages which XTP provides, and we describe the types of applications for which XTP has proven suitable.
