Abstract

This paper develops general recommendations for the migration from explicit, OSI-based communication to implicit, OMG/ CORBA based communication. These recommendations are validated by our experiences from the port of the External Reference Manager (XRM) component of the BERKOM multimedia mail system. The former version of the XRM was based on OSI-communication and implemented using the ISODE package. The new XRM uses the CORBA implementation Orbix 1.3 from IONA Ltd Additionally, the paper gives an overview of the problems that will occur during the reimplementation of a monolithic, distributed application using concepts of distributed object systems. It gives an insight into our current and future activities with respect to distributed middleware platforms.
