Abstract

Multimedia teleconferencing over dynamic wide area networks raises certain issues. Chief among them is how the coordination, control and state synchronization functions required in conference control will be implemented in the presence of message loss, topological changes and changes in conference participation. In this paper, we describe an approach based on distributed membership protocols to derive a robust framework for conference control in dynamic environments. Our protocols function in the presence of partitioning network failures, and they ensure that consistent membership information is eventually installed at all participant sites in the same network partition. It is shown that these protocols can aid in implementing many conference control functions in a simple manner.
