Abstract

This paper introduces the ''train mechanism'', a novel signalling virtual channel (SVC) call control mechanism and protocol for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) broadband networks. The ''train'' provides a unifying mechanism, enabling ATM to carry and route user traffic with arbitrary granularity ranging from a single cell, to a datagram, to a permanent virtual circuit. The performance for various length trains is determined.
