Abstract

In this paper, we suggest a Migration Approach implementing a LAN based on ATM which basically includes the installation of a hierarchically structured cabling system with a star configuration as well as the implementation of the Cell Oriented SYstem COSY (therefore the name COSY Migration Approach). These COSY systems handle both cell-based and packet-based data traffic and thus allow the access not only to the switched public ATM networks but also to traditional shared-medium LANs. The proposed COSY Migration Approach allows a smooth transition from today's LANs to future modern technologies such as ATM.
