An autonomous model of HIV recombination is proposed and analyzed. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of all equilibria are obtained. Stability and global attraction of these equilibria are also fully studied. The principle of competitive exclusion is no longer valid, interclade recombination effect confers competitive advantages to the recombinant virus. An optimal vaccine strategy also is suggested.
