Abstract

This report describes on-going research on the application of a machine learning technique to build an expert system shell for the preliminary stage of engineering design. The proposed system incorporates the ideas of a morphological approach to design with dynamic generation of design constraints from examples evaluated by the expert. The design constraints are presented to the user in the form of a decision tree which grows with the progress of the design process. The design constraints represent design heuristics and designer's experience which are employed here to provide meaningful advise to the system user.
