Abstract

In this paper, we present an exact algorithm (OPTNET) to design an optimal backbone network. We consider the classical backbone design problem under discrete constraints imposed on the transmission lines and traffic routing. That is, we assume that the node and circuit requirements are given. The objective is to find the minimum cost link topology that satisfies all circuit requirements. This problem is related to the discrete multicommodity flow problem in mathematics. We show that OPTNET is practical in designing small and medium size networks.
