Abstract

IEEE1394 is a standard interface protocol for digital multimedia consumer devices and it also serves to construct home entertainment networks. To integrate home data and home entertainment networks, this paper proposes a Java-based middleware architecture supporting IEEE1394 and TCP/IP for digital home entertainment networks. The proposed architecture is able to provide interoperability between 1394-based services and TCP-based services, and accommodates multimedia service requirements in home network environments having various protocols and devices. In this architecture, we introduce a queueing mechanism to communicate with TCP/IP and IEEE1394, and it is fully compatible with Jini™ network technology using TCP/IP.
