Abstract

This paper designs an impulse-radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) system for precise ranging and low-rate communication, especially targeting IEEE 802.15.4a standard, which is a candidate technology for realizing the ubiquitous home. We first introduce the IR-UWB packet and packet based ranging in IEEE 802.15.4a. Incorporated by IR-UWB link budget analysis, we propose a full-digital transceiver along with the corresponding baseband receiver algorithms. We then discuss implementation issues for IR-UWB system, including analog-to-digital converter requirements, receiver baseband architecture and ranging counter. The experiments on ranging and positioning in indoor environments verify our system design.
