Abstract

An MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) hierarchical decoder structure capable of receiving an MPEG compressed bit stream decoding the bit stream, and providing outputs with different resolution pictures is described. In the structure of the decoder, full motion information can be used at low-resolution picture decoding. A smooth model is proposed for the compensation of block-based decimation. Simulation results show that the method with compensation outperforms the DCT-masked method with respect to PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) and with the same memory requirements. The former needs more computation, but this can be alleviated by combined processing
