Abstract

This is an extension of earlier work on the bifurcation and chaotic behavior of an acetylcholinesterase phenomenological two-compartments model. In the present work, the investigation uses a novel model focusing on the dynamic characteristics of the cholinergic neurocycle involving in its simplest form a two-enzymes/two-compartments system. This investigation may be useful to uncover some characteristics of the important neurocycle of acetylcholinesterase/choline acetyltransferase enzymes system. The bifurcation, instability, and chaotic behavior are investigated with special emphasis on neural transmission in the human brain. This type of work may help to stimulate new research directions on cholinergic brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
