This paper presents a new paradigm to be applied to engineering consultancy companies, addressing Project Documentation and Technical Archives. This paradigm is based on an original framework developed by the author, including not only macro-processes innovation, but also, the implementation of an Electronic Document Management System. The old processes are analyzed, and new ones created, with Electronic Document Management System as an enabler. The methodology is developed to be a corporate-based one, avoiding automation island creation. The purpose is not only to innovate old processes, but also to create a teamwork mentality, a collaborative environment, and finally the reduction of paper flow within the company. Issues concerning software, hardware and peopleware are also analyzed. The research is not only concerned with the technical barriers, but also, with the cultural and organizational ones-the most difficult to be overcome. A case study is presented, as this model was implemented by the author, in a major Brazilian engineering consultancy company.
