Abstract

Software maintenance is a complex topic largely ignored by information systems management, yet it is growing in importance. This paper identifies the major factors that impact software maintenance efforts from the perspective of a manager. Three classes of factors are identified: technological, administrative and behavioral. The paper surveys past research regarding the impact of these factors, and identifies those that may contribute to increased productivity. The paper also identifies areas that need further research.
