Case study: Design issues for a fibre optic local network

The paper reports an analysis of different CSMA-CD protocols examined in the frame of the Ermes project, which looked at the implementation of a distributed system based on a local area network supported by a fibre optic medium. The paper provides a short description of the Ermes local network, and describes an analytical model of the access protocol. Simulation results are given for the performances of different adaptive methods with respect to both efficiency and fairness. Some considerations about hardware implementation of the access protocol are also provided.
