Abstract

An account is given of recent developments in the work towards publication of standards for data security. The lead has been taken so far by organizations in the USA, but important developments are to be expected on the international scene, with the International Organization for Standardization active in the field. Thus far, the work has concentrated on encipherment algorithms, the rules under which they are applied and the enhancement of communications protocols. The paper concludes with a forecast of the progress to be expected in the future.
