In order to describe some specific and general movement patterns, in this paper, we propose a constrained model and an unconstrained model for Hierarchical Mobile IP; and get the analytic expression about the equilibrium probability that an MN moves across i FAs within a gateway foreign agent (GFA) domain, which is based on the size of GFA domain, the GFA domain residence time distribution, the foreign agent (FA) domain residence time distribution. In addition, if the residence time is Erlang distribution, the probability depends on the size of GFA domain and the ratio of the average GFA domain residence time to the average FA domain residence time. Compared with other models, our models reflect more practical movement behaviors. These results are very useful for the cost analysis of location updating.
